It came upon the Midnight Clear - also referred to as It came upon a Midnight Clear, is a Christmas carol written by Edmund Sears and frequently set to two different tunes: Noel, an adaptation of an old English melody, or Richard Storrs Willis' Carol. Richard Storrs Willis first published his melody in his Church Chorals and Choir Studies in 1850. After that he expanded the tune to its current form, and several years later found that it had become popular and incorporated into various church collections.
